On a day featuring mixed weather Bedford U14’s travelled to Leighton Buzzard Hockey Club for their annual tournament. The day started with bright sunshine but this soon turned into a hail storm, wind, sunshine and then more hail topped off with some rain at the end. The first game of the day was between Bedford and Bedford. This was a recurring theme throughout the day with Bedford having 3 teams out of the 6 involved, one of these was a combined team with a few members from Olney. The Bedford/Olney (nicknamed ‘Bolney’ by our Junior Co-ordinator Sue) team played superbly all day. If my memory is correct it was 2 draws and 3 losses for this team, coached by Phil from Olney and Ed one of our superb young helpers. Everyone played really well all day and never gave up.
Bedford A began with the first two games being against Bedford teams. A slow start was had and two draws were the results. After beating Shefford & Sandy 2-0, they played Leighton Buzzard A’s and drew 1-1, this being the only goal conceded for the A’s. a final 2-0 win against Leighton Buzzard B’s followed. An undefeated day for Bedford A coached by Josh saw the team take home silver!
Bedford B’s started with a draw against the A’s and results only got better as the day went on. A win against Bedford/Olney followed by wins against both Leighton Buzzard teams and Shefford & Sandy meant they also finished the day unbeaten. The team coached by Steph played amazing hockey at times and overcame everyone in their path, bar Bedford A’s, to take home a deserved gold!
All players played superbly well all day with our 2 goalkeepers deserving a special mention, only letting in a few goals all day spread across 15 matches!
These results don’t come easily and it’s a credit to all players and coaches who work really hard to strive to be the best. We also really couldn’t do this without the support of all coaches we are so lucky to have on a Sunday morning come rain or shine. So thank you to Steph, Ruaridh, Ed, Leon, Cerys and all the Ladies and Men’s team’s helpers who come down to support us all.
